“The imagination is an essential tool of the mind, a fundamental way of thinking,
an indispensable means of becoming and remaining human.”
– Ursula K. Le Guin “The Operating Instructions”

I work primarily in philosophy of mind.  Much of my work concerns imagination – what it is and what it is used for.  I have also done considerable work on phenomenal consciousness.  More information is available on my research page.  See also my PhilPapers profile and my Google Scholar profile.

At CMC, I teach classes in philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and logic.  I also serve as Director of the Gould Center for Humanistic Studies.

For 2023-24, I am serving as Vice President of the Pacific Division of the American Philosophical Association and also as a member of the APA Board of Officers. This will be followed by a term as President of the Pacific Division in 2024-25.
